While the Oregon Trail is etched in American lore, Wilderness and the American Spirit unearths the fascinating, yet overshadowed alternative westward route, the Applegate Trail. This reveals a unique perspective on the westward movement. But beneath the surface of these tales of pioneers and trails lies a powerful narrative. Geologist and storyteller Ruby McConnell peels back the romanticized myths of the Wild West, revealing the environmental consequences of the U.S.'s national obsession with expansion.

This gripping exploration blends science, history, and captivating storytelling. Discover how the quest for wealth and power has shaped our relationship with the land, from the first emigrants to the 21st century's looming environmental crisis.

Wilderness and the American Spirit challenges us to confront the stories we tell ourselves about the West and reckon with a centuries-long pattern of resource extraction above all else. It's a wake-up call for a new era of environmental thinking.
